Dear Friend,

As we head into the summer season, I want to help you stay safe while enjoying the beach, lake, pools, and water activities. Recently, the Department of Parks and Recreation provided some important tips you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones.

I’m sharing them with you today because I want you to have a summer full of great memories instead of a tragic event that turns your life upside down.

Basic Water Safety Tips

  1. Check the Weather: Always start by looking at the weather forecast. Pay attention to heat advisories and be prepared. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring shade and sunblock, and stay hydrated. Use umbrellas or wear hats to shield yourself from the sun’s intense rays.
  2. Storm Safety: Be aware of any forecasted storms. If there’s an electrical storm, do not stay on the beach or in the water. Safety comes first.
  3. Supervise Your Children: One of the biggest safety issues is the lack of adult supervision. Many incidents of drowning or near-drowning occur because children are not being properly watched. Always keep a close eye on your kids when they are near water.
  4. Use lifejackets: I know the kids might protest, but the truth is that even strong swimmers take a risk when they swim in open water.  A lifejacket is one of the most effective ways to prevent drowning.
  5. Pet Safety:  Pay attention to dog regulations. Depending on where you go, dogs may or may not be allowed.  If you bring your dog, keep them on a leash, and if you and your little ones see a dog at the beach, don’t assume it’s friendly.
  6. Avoid Rock Jetties and Pipes: These structures are dangerous and illegal to climb on or jump from. Many accidents happen each year when people try to jump off or fall off rock jetties and pipes.
  7. Alcohol and Glass Restrictions: Alcohol and glass containers are illegal on the beach. Make sure you bring proper, non-alcoholic beverages and use plastic or metal containers to avoid accidents and injuries.  And consider insisting on water shoes.  It can be hard to spot broken glass, and having a barrier between the ground and bare feet can prevent a serious injury.
  8. Stay Hydrated: Even if you’re in the water, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  9. Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen regularly and wear protective clothing to prevent sunburn.
  10. Buddy System: Always swim with a buddy. Never swim alone.
  11. Know Your Limits: Be aware of your swimming abilities and stay within your comfort zone. If you’re not a strong swimmer, stay in shallow waters.

Following these tips will help you enjoy a safe and fun summer at the beach, lake, or pool. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, accidents happen. If you or a loved one is ever injured in a public space due to someone else’s negligence, don’t hesitate to reach out to me for help.

I’m here to help in every way I can.

Until next time, stay safe, stay vigilant, and have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Paul Samakow
