Beware of Defective Airbags – Your Safety is at Risk

Nissan has issued a dire warning urging owners of nearly 84,000 older model cars not to drive their vehicles due to the risk of exploding airbag inflators. This urgent recall affects certain Nissan vehicles equipped with unrepaired Takata airbags.

The Danger

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the severity of this problem. Due to the age of the vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators, there is a heightened risk of the inflator exploding during an airbag deployment. When these inflators explode, they can propel sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death. This is not a hypothetical risk—at least 27 people have been killed in the United States by defective Takata airbags, and another 400 have been injured.

Affected Vehicles

The “do not drive” warning impacts the following models:

• 2002 through 2006 Nissan Sentra cars
• 2002 through 2004 Pathfinder SUVs
• 2002 and 2003 Infiniti QX4 SUVs

If you own one of these vehicles, you need to stop driving it immediately. Even a minor crash can trigger an exploding airbag, resulting in life-altering injuries or death.

What You Should Do

1. Check Your Vehicle: Determine if your vehicle has an open Takata airbag recall. You can do this by visiting Nissan’s recall page or the NHTSA website.
2. Schedule a Repair: If your vehicle is affected, schedule a free repair as soon as possible. Do not delay. Nissan is offering free recall repairs to make sure you stay safe.
3. Do Not Drive: Follow the “do not drive” warning. Avoid using the vehicle until the repair has been completed.

The danger posed by these defective airbags is real. As the NHTSA has pointed out, older model-year vehicles are at higher risk because the age of the airbag contributes to the likelihood of it exploding. This is a serious issue that demands immediate attention.
