FREDERICK CO., MD – One person died and two others suffered injuries after an aggressive lane change on U.S. 340 caused a crash Monday afternoon.
According to WTOP, the fatal crash took place on U.S. 340 eastbound near MD-180 around 1:30 PM on April 25th.
A Jeep Liberty merged aggressively into another lane, causing a Honda CRV to swerve to avoid it. The Honda CRV subsequently spun out across multiple lanes and overturned after hitting a guardrail.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty fled the scene.
The front seat passenger of the Honda CRV, 48-year-old Shannon Kephart, sadly died at the scene.
The driver of the Honda CRV, 61-year-old Dean Kephart, and the backseat passenger, 68-year-old Cathy Cyrus, both suffered serious injuries. They were taken to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, but their current conditions are unknown.
Witnesses were able to identify the license plate of the Jeep Liberty. Authorities have since been able to track down the driver. The crash remains under investigation.
