Dear Reader,
Scammers are getting more sophisticated, and it doesn’t matter how smart you are—anyone can fall victim. I’m sharing this because I care about your safety and want you to be prepared. Here are some of the most common scams you need to watch out for:
Gift Card Scams: If anyone tells you to pay with a gift card, it’s almost always a scam. Scammers use gift cards because they’re hard to trace, and once you give them the codes, your money is gone. Even if you use your credit card to buy the gift cards, getting your money back is nearly impossible.
Fake Deals on Social Media: Scammers post “hot deals” on online marketplaces, showing off great prices on popular items. You send the money, but the item never arrives. Always be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true—because they probably are.
Bogus Service Offers: Scammers offer deep discounts on services like home repairs or cleaning. You pay upfront, and they never show up. Always research the company and make sure you’re hiring licensed contractors before booking any service.
Bank Impersonation: Scammers call, text, or email you, pretending to be your bank. They’ll say there’s a problem with your account and try to trick you into sharing your personal info. Never give out your information. If you’re not sure, call the number on the back of your card to verify.
Threatening Fines: Scammers pretend to be from the police, IRS, or other government agencies, saying you owe a fine and threatening arrest if you don’t pay immediately. Don’t let fear cloud your judgment. Contact the institution directly to confirm before paying anything.
Cute Pets for Sale: Scammers post pictures of adorable pets online and ask for a deposit. You send the money, but the pet doesn’t exist. Don’t fall for it—never send payment without seeing the pet in person first.
Fake Customer Service: Scammers pose as reps from companies you trust, claiming there’s an issue with your order and asking for money to resolve it. Always be suspicious of these contacts. Call the company directly to confirm any claims.
Identity Theft and Fraudulent Loans: Scammers steal identities to take out loans, rent apartments, or empty bank accounts. Protect yourself by monitoring your credit.
These scams are out there, and they’re targeting people just like you. Stay vigilant, ask questions, and always double-check before sending money or giving out personal information.
I’m sharing this because I genuinely care about keeping you and your loved ones safe. If you ever need help with a personal injury claim, don’t hesitate to call my office at 703-761-4343 or 301-949-1515. We’re here to support you.
