Dear Reader,
This is a Public Service Announcement you won’t want to miss if you live in Maryland.
Imagine this: You walk out to your car, ready to start your day, but instead of the familiar hum of the engine, you’re greeted by silence or a loud roar that sends chills down your spine. Something’s wrong—very wrong. Your catalytic converter has been stolen, and now you’re looking at a costly, frustrating, and time-consuming problem.
Catalytic converter theft is a nationwide epidemic. Thieves target these essential car parts because they’re packed with valuable metals like rhodium, palladium, and platinum—metals worth more than gold. The sad truth is that replacing a stolen catalytic converter can set you back around $1,200, and that’s if you’re lucky. For many, it’s more than just money out of pocket; it’s time off work, missed appointments, and a lot of unnecessary stress.
So, what exactly is a catalytic converter, and why do you need one? Simply put, it’s a crucial component of your vehicle’s exhaust system. It reduces harmful emissions, turning toxic gases into safer substances before they’re released into the air. Without it, not only are you breaking the law by driving an emissions-violating vehicle, but you’re also putting yourself and the environment at risk.
But here’s the good news: The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), in partnership with the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council, is stepping up to help protect your vehicle. They’re offering free catalytic converter labels and etching kits to Maryland motorists—at no cost to you.
These labels serve as a deterrent to thieves by providing a visible identification number that makes the catalytic converter traceable by law enforcement if stolen. It’s a simple yet effective way to protect your investment and save yourself from the headache of dealing with theft.
To get your free label kit, all you need to do is request one through your MVA account. Click HERE to easily access the request form. The kit will be mailed directly to you, and once you receive it, you can register the label with Pin2Vin’s National Database. This allows law enforcement to track your converter if it’s stolen, increasing the chances of recovery.
For those who prefer a professional touch, select Maryland dealerships are partnering with the MVA to etch the label serial number onto your vehicle’s catalytic converter free of charge.
If you’re in Maryland, I urge you to take advantage of this free program. Request your catalytic converter label today and safeguard your vehicle against theft.
